History came alive for Rocky Point Middle School eighth-grade students during a recent field trip to two significant landmarks in New York City.
The grade level took a Statue Cruises ferry to Liberty Island, where they ventured to the top of the Statue of Liberty’s 154-foot pedestal, viewed the New York City skyline and visited the museum inside the pedestal. From there, they visited and toured Ellis Island, reliving the journey immigrants took when entering the United States.
The trip was a fitting complement to the students’ social studies curriculum, in which they have been studying industrialization and immigration. They have also studied different groups that came to America, where they settled, and the Ellis Island immigration process.
