On Monday evening, May 19, the North Shore Youth Council Big Buddy/Little Buddy program celebrated its participants and those whose lives the “buddies” have touched this school year. Parents, school administrators, program coordinators, "big buddies" and "little buddies" were recognized for their commitment to the program as well as for the program’s many accomplishments. The Big Buddy/Little Buddy program in the Rocky Point School District is a cross-age mentoring program whereby the younger students are matched with high school volunteers for support and guidance. Big Buddies provide Little Buddies with positive role models, help them improve feelings about themselves, and increase motivation for school performance. Together they participate in activities such as homework, reading, and recreational activities. These activities include social and community living skills. The Big Buddies are responsible and committed to being a positive role model and to help the Little Buddies gain meaningful experiences during high school.
