Rocky Point School middle and high school students and staff helped increase awareness and promote understanding of a developmental disability that has risen rapidly in the past few decades as they marked Autism Awareness month this April.
Informational announcements were made over the loud speakers, staff members donated funds to wear jeans to school as part of a “Jeans/Genes” for Autism fundraiser, and students and staff had the chance to purchase Autism Awareness bracelets. Proceeds from both fundraisers were donated to Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to funding research on the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism.
Middle school autism/behavior consultant Denise Valvo and high school social worker Jennifer Zaffino coordinated these events.
