Rocky Point seventh-grader Rex Alex, eighth-grader Jennifer Bradley and ninth-grader Jade Pinkenburg have qualified to compete at the FIRST Lego League North American Open Championship in Carlsbad, California on May 15-17.
The students, who competed under the team name The GearHeadz, were awarded the prestigious first-place Champions Award and the first-place Robot Performance Award at the FLL final, held at Longwood High School. These awards earned them their bid to the North American contest.
Each year, FIRST releases a new challenge consisting of three parts: Project, requiring participants to come up with innovative solutions to real-world problems; Core Values, requiring teams to solve a surprise challenge and then evaluating them on their ability to cooperate and work together; and the Robot Game, where teams use their self-designed and programmed robot to achieve specific tasks on a playing field. Abiding by this year’s theme of “World Class,” participants had to generate solutions to improve learning. The GearHeadz excelled in all areas of the competition, meriting the Champions Award.
The students will compete against 75 other championship teams at the tournament in California.
